Don Sweeney, the Boston Bruins general manager, decided to fire Montgomery as head coach earlier this week. While most people believed he'd land on his feet, fans didn't think it would happen so fast.
Indeed, Montgomery is already back in the NHL, only a few days after being let go by the Bruins.
He is joining the St. Louis Blues, who fired Drew Bannister to make room for Montgomery.
Chris Johnston and Frank Seravalli were the first to spread the news:
The St. Louis Blues organization released the following statement:
Montgomery worked in the Blues organization as an assistant coach between 2020 and 2022 and left the team to accept the head coaching position in Boston.
As for Bannister, he was named interim head coach of the Blues nearly a year ago, and back in May, became the official coach of the team, signing a two-year deal.
St. Louis will hope that Montgomery will be able to turn things around. The team has been struggling this season, with a 9-12-1 record in 21 games.
They are currently 6th in the Central Division, only a few points ahead of the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators.
It'll be interesting to see how Montgomery fares on his first game as the Blues head coach tomorrow, against the mighty New York Rangers.
