Patrick Sharp may have been an icon on the ice for the Chicago Blackhawks, but now the veteran is thriving in a new role with the Flyers.
The Philadelphia Flyers took a huge step forward in 2023/24, and now they may continue to do so with the growing influence of a former NHL great. After his playing days were over, Patrick Sharp, formerly of the Chicago Blackhawks took up a role as a TV announcer, but now, he serves as special advisor to the hockey operations department with the Flyers.
It's a role he has excelled in already, as many, including 2024 first-round pick
Jett Luchanko have noted how good he looks on the ice at the recent development camp.
«It's really cool to see him out here,» Flyers 2024 first-round pick Jett Luchanko said. «Looks like he could still be playing. You can tell he just loves the game.»
Sharp's new role has reinvigorated his love for the sport after retiring many years ago, and while he enjoyed the on-screen role, he's made it clear that this is his calling.
«I think (television) was great for me the first three or four years after retiring. It kept me in the game, fed my ego, got a lot of face time,» Sharp said. «But as the years went on, it became less enjoyable. I loved the people I worked with, both with the Hawks and at NBC. It felt like they were a part of a team. But I missed actually wearing a team logo and working with players and being a part of something.»
His title in Philadelphia remains ambiguous, but after the work he did at recent development camp, his role is becoming more and more clear, and given the experience he has in the NHL, this will be a major advantage for Flyers prospects coming through the system.
