Early on Tuesday, the St. Louis Blues announced a surprise trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and in moments, they clarified exactly why they made that trade.
As announced on social media, the team have now revealed they have extended offer sheets to two impressive young Edmonton Oilers players in Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway, with the Oilers now having seven days to either match the offer or walk away from the two players.
According to the Blues, the offer for Broberg comes in at two-years, $4.58 million AAV, while Holloway's is reportedly two-years, $2.29 million AAV, with a second and third round pick to be given as compensation if the Oilers don't go ahead and match the deal. One interesting point around this is made by David Pagnotta, revealing that both players made contact with St. Louis and signed the deals before they were officially announced, which some may perceive as a major problem.
Whatever the case, this move has been months in the making, with several teams linked to both players, and at 23 and 22 years of age, this could be a masterstroke from GM Doug Armstrong, who now forces the Oilers front office to make a decision, and if they opt not to match it, they'll get two intriguing young players full of potential.
