The veteran forward Brandon Saad was officially linked to a top Eastern Conference team after his contract was terminated by the St. Louis Blues.

Tuesday, the St. Louis Blues made a surprising announcement: they placed Brandon Saad on waivers amid a season of struggles for the veteran.

Later, it was announced that the player would have his contract $4.5M AAV contract, with another season left on it after this one, terminated by the organization

To explain his decision, Doug Armstrong, general manager of the team, stated that the player hasn't been producing offensively and that the cap is tight.

In his own words:

"Obviously the production's not there. There's been a group that's been here for a while that things don't seem to be changing. Collectively, you have to start chipping further and further up."

"Right now, the cap is tight," Armstrong said. "Statistically, he's not having a great year, and he's got another year left. If we could find a match, we would try. We don't make these decisions, wake up one day and not try and cultivate the best I'd like to put the players in the best situations and also get the best return for the Blues We don't try and not get the best assets that we can. The market speaks and then you just react."

With the forward available on the free agent market, it'll be interesting to see which organization offers him a contract ahead of the trade deadline.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period linked him to one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference: the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Here's what he said:

"Whether it's a team that's looking for some extra punch, like the Toronto Maple Leafs, that are going to look at a team at a player to come in to say, a third line role on one of the wings this could be an option for them at basically a million dollar, pro rated contract."

For the Leafs, adding an experienced forward who could add depth in the bottom-six ahead of the playoffs would be a great idea.
