The Seattle Kraken likely aren't making the playoffs this season, and a Canadian team that is currently in a playoff position is eyeing Brandon Tanev in a trade.

There is a Canadian team that hasn't made the playoffs in seven straight years but may be about to break that run this season. The team currently sits third in the Atlantic Division with a 28-20-4 record, just four points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Ottawa Senators are ready to be buyers

With a legitimate chance at some postseason action, Ottawa Senators general manager Steve Staios is reportedly ready to be a buyer at the trade deadline, something Ottawa hasn't done in years.

He has, according to Bruce Garrioch of the 'Ottawa Citizen', targeted a winger, with Kraken veteran Brandon Tanev one of the names of interest.

"The belief in league circles is that the Senators have some level of interest in the likes of Chicago Blackhawks winger Ryan Donato and Seattle Kraken winger Brandon Tanev, who are both listed on TSN's Trade Bait board."

That's different from the reporting earlier in the week where it sounded like Staios was targeting a defenseman.

So far this season, Seattle has underperformed, sitting sixth in the Pacific Division with 49 points in 53 games. With the playoff hopes running low, Seattle will be one logical trade partner for Ottawa.

Tanev, 33, is on an expiring contract and would likely welcome a move to a playoff contender. He has eight goals and 15 points in 51 games, but his real value lies in his defensive play, an asset that fits well with the Senators' structured, low-event style.
