Canucks GM Puts Star Forward Elias Pettersson on Notice After J.T. Miller Trade
Now that the Canucks have traded away J.T. Miller, the team's GM Patrik Allvin has revealed some expectations that he has for Elias Pettersson going forward.
Canucks GM Patrik Allvin bet big on Elias Pettersson when trading out J.T. Miller. During Saturday's press conference, Allvin reaffirmed that Pettersson must become a new-level player.
«That's part of being a professional hockey player, especially when you commit to that kind of contract,» Allvin said, per NHL.com.
Pettersson signed an eight-year, $92.8 million deal in March 2024 but, yet, hasn't lived up to it, having accumulated a meager 33 points in 45 played games. His playoff performance a season ago wasn't any better.
Friday, Vancouver traded out Miller for a price tag including Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and a 2025 first-round selection, but a player who accumulated 102 points a season ago, Miller's loss puts even added burden onto Pettersson's shoulder.
Allvin expects a lot more from Pettersson
Allvin took cognizance of Pettersson's failure but bet big on him becoming a better player.
«My expectation is higher on him than anyone else on our team, and I expect him to meet my expectation, and I expect him to meet his own expectation, and so far he has not done that," Allvin added.
"If you talk to him, he's disappointed, but he's aware of it, and I know that he's capable, and he will work at it.» Allvin said.
Allvin specifically mentioned trading out Miller wasn't about picking sides but about getting a little deeper, and Pettersson now stands an opportunity to rise to the challenge.
