Auston Matthews has been the best goal scorer in the NHL for a number of years now, but his 2023-24 campaign has taken it to another level, and he's not done yet.
Auston Matthews to chase 80 this season?
During a recent Maple Leafs game, one fan spotted something interesting on the glove of Matthews, potentially revealing his plans for the remainder of the 2023-24 season.
heard it hear first, he doesn't want 70, he wants EIGHTY
While there's a possibility that the 80 hidden away on his glove could mean something else, given his desire to be the league's best goal scorer, it doesn't take a leap to assume that he wants 80 this season.
Greatest goal scorer of all-time?
Given his current pace, Matthews is on track to record the second greatest season of all time (era adjusted), behind only Brett Hull, the last player to net 80 goals in a year way back in 1990-91.
The top era-adjusted scoring seasons in NHL history:
1. Brett Hull (90-91)
2. Auston Matthews (23-24)
This isn't just a great season from Auston Matthews. It's shaping up to be one of the greatest seasons by anyone, ever:
During their Monday matinee game against the St. Louis Blues, Matthews has netted his 49th goal of the year in game number 52, and if he keeps this pace up, there's no reason to doubt that No. 34 could go on to have the best goal scoring season in NHL history.
