This afternoon NHL insider Elliotte Friedman spoke about the Toronto Maple Leafs on his 32 Thoughts Podcast. Friedman believes that a move could be made involving Nick Robertson in the coming days. The potential move comes after Robertson's frustrations have built up.
On 32T Elliotte Friedman mentioned that Nick Robertson wasn't happy earlier in the year. He understood why Robertson was being sent down, as he isn't waiver eligible. Toronto wants him back this season after the trade deadline. However, if he remains unhappy and still holds value, they will likely trade him.
With Robertson unhappy the Maple Leafs could use him as a major trade chip. That however relies on other teams seeing the value in him despite his recent struggles.
Will Another Team Take A Chance On Robertson?
This season has been another disappointment for Nick Robertson at the NHL level. He has been limited to the bottom six when in the lineup and a healthy scratch a decent amount as well. However, when sent to the AHL Robertson outclasses his peers and looks too good to be down there.
This likely means an NHL team with less talent at forward could see the value in Nick Robertson. The Maple Leafs could go hunting for a major upgrade on defense or in goal. If they use Robertson in a trade it could come back to bite them as he is just 22 years old.
Regardless of what the Maple Leafs do they need to do it soon. Robertson cannot have his development continually stunted with that much talent. Either the Maple Leafs need to commit to him or move on.
