Toronto Maple Leafs make major cap move placing Mitch Marner on LTIR
The Toronto Maple Leafs have just made a massive cap move late in the season by placing Mitch Marner on LTIR, freeing up loads of cap space before playoffs.
Mitch Marner has been out of the Leafs lineup since suffering from a high-ankle injury a few weeks ago against the Boston Bruins. He has been getting close to a potential return, even skating with the team yesterday. However, it appears he will still be missing some time, and so the Leafs decided to place him on the LTIR injured list.
As Elliotte Friedman points out, this is likely just a cap move, as Marner has missed enough time to be eligible for a return later this week.
Cap move. Marner eligible to come off tomorrow and play this week
The Toronto Maple Leafs should embrace the fact that Marner is on LTIR, and use the cap space to call players up. If I were Toronto, as long as they continue to win games in his absence, I would keep Marner on LTIR in order to have the flexibility needed before the playoffs start. There is really no need to rush him back and would give him even more rest.
We will see what the Leafs do and when Mitch Marner will return.
