Vancouver Canucks players get ripped to shreds by their own coach and General Manager
The Vancouver Canucks are on quite a rough slide as of late, and their head coach and general manager aren't happy one bit and publicly bashed the team.
The Vancouver Canucks suffered a heart-wrenching loss, 5-1, to longtime rivals, the Boston Bruins, on Saturday night on home ice.
A listless effort brought sharp barbs from head coach Rick Tocchet and president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford, an indication that the Management was not happy with the team's performance.
Jim Rutherford was measured in his comments, but make no mistake, he wasn't a happy man. Quite plainly, he said the Canucks' playoff aspirations would be short-lived unless they quit losing on home ice.
"You can't be a playoff team with the record we have at home," said Rutherford matter of factly during a post-game interview with Scott Oake.
Not quite as much from Rick Tocchet, though, and he certainly didn't mince words on his team's poor effort along with a lack of following the game plan that was in place against the Bruins.
"We talked about a certain play we wanted to do against Boston," said Tocchet. "We didn't do it until maybe in the third. I think that pisses the staff off because we had a good game plan.
You're hoping you'd play a little better in front of him, especially at the start of the first period." said a frustrated Tocchet.
He did mention the lack of support for Goaltender Thatcher Demko, who's back from a serious injury.
Veteran Canucks reporter Jeff Paterson said coming out with a poor effort against a rival could be enough to get a coach fired.
But with public criticism coming now from Rutherford and Tocchet, it puts a little more heat on the team. The onus now goes to how the players will answer after two of the more influential figures within the organization call them out publicly.
