Player of the Vegas Golden Knights organization announces heartbreaking cancer diagnosis
Mason Geertsen is a player currently with the AHL affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights, the Henderson Silver Knights, and sadly revealed his cancer diagnosis.
A hockey player with one of the Vegas Golden Knights' minor league affiliates has shared that he was diagnosed with cancer last year.
Mason Geertsen, a defenseman for the Henderson Silver Knights, said in a statement Friday that a scan in one of his legs last November had detected B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Geertsen, 29, started treatment immediately, taking a month of the season off before returning to play. He has remained on treatments through this summer and is in remission now.
"Now that I'm on the other side of this journey, I feel it's incredibly important to share my story and encourage everyone to be their own best health advocate," Geertson said.
Now, as the Silver Knights prepare for their annual Hockey Fights Cancer game, he encourages everyone to get routine checkups and speak to a doctor if they notice anything out of the ordinary.
"It's so easy to put off scheduling an appointment but trust me when I say prioritizing your own wellness is something that is worth the time and effort," Geertson said. "It has been for me."
Now in his second season with Henderson, Geertsen inked a two-year, two-way contract with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023. He's also played 25 games with the New Jersey Devils during the 2021-22 NHL season.
The Golden Knights organization has fought cancer battles before. Defenseman Shea Theodore became a vocal advocate for cancer awareness after his testicular cancer diagnosis and successful treatment in 2019.
We wish nothing but a smooth road ahead for Mason, and we are definitely glad to hear he is doing better.
