Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin made an early exit from Monday's informal skate, leaving just minutes after the skate began. He'd completed his warm-up and dove into the first drill when he suddenly pulled back, appearing to grimace in discomfort.
Ovechkin immediately skated to the bench, received pats on the back, and promptly headed down the tunnel toward the locker room. Thus far, he has yet to return to the ice as the remainder of the team continues the session on another rink.
It remains to be seen whether Ovechkin is nursing an injury or if this will impact his status for training camp, which begins Thursday. Veterans are scheduled for off-ice testing and physicals on Wednesday.
Approaching his 39th birthday on Tuesday, Alex Ovechkin is set to embark on his 20th NHL season. Having spent the offseason training in his native Russia, he returned to the U.S. recently. Currently with 843 career goals, he is a mere 42 shy of breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time NHL goals record.
