The Pittsburgh Penguins downfall has been hard to watch for many hockey fans. The remnants of the team's core is still there, but the team around them simply isn't good enough any more. That was clear last night.

Penguins Losing Streak Continues Against Edmonton Oilers

The team took a two-game losing skid into their game last night against the Oilers. Throughout the game there was little hope that the team would snap the losing streak as the Oilers thoroughly outplayed them throughout the contest. It started early with Connor McDavid jumping on a turnover to give the Oilers the lead just over a minute into the game.

Things only got worse as the Oilers slowly built their lead throughout the game. The Penguins meanwhile, were unable to get a single puck past Calvin Pickard.

Ultimately, the Oilers would win the contest 4-0, shutting down the Penguins and keeping the hoe crowd quiet all night long.

Oilers Defenseman Causes Scrum With Sidney Crosby

To add insult to injury, Oilers defenseman Vincent Desharnais decided to give Sidney Crosby some gloved punches late in the game, just to rub the Penguin's legend's face in it. While the Penguins would get a powerplay out of the scrum, it was still an embarrassing moment for the team. To make matters worse, they could not capitalize on the late opportunity to end the shutout.

The Penguins are now looking at possibly drafting inside the top-ten this year, which would mean the draft pick traded to the Sharks in the Erik Karlsson deal will move to next season as a unprotected pick. This could be a disaster for the team as Sidney Crosby's contract expires next year. Could the legend be on the move next year as the team looks to retool on the fly? Only time will tell.

As seen on Vincent Desharnais mauls Sidney Crosby late in the 3rd.
