The QMJHL is on of the best junior hockey leagues in Canada. Being one of the members of the CHL, it is up there in terms of talent. They also have been taking player safety more seriously and have tried to phase out some of the most classic parts of hockey.
It was announced today that they will be upping their penalty for fighting resulting in suspensions as opposed to the normal 5 minutes players get in other leagues.
This is quite the penalty for a fight. Back in the 70s and 80s, fights were a major part of the game and still are a part of today's game as well.
It is a player safety move from the QMJHL which makes sense because the QMJHL is a junior hockey league with boys playing against men. It is not fair to have a 16-year-old kid go toe to toe with a 20-year-old.
Even though the QMJHL is prioritizing player safety, fans are still upset at the whitewashing this does to the game we love. Some are worried this will trickle all the way up to the professional level and that would certainly make games less entertaining.
