BREAKING: Gary Bettman Makes A Decision On The Olympics
The NHL has been away from the Olympic scene since the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. Since then there has been very little best on best competition on the world stage in hockey. Today Gary Bettman and the NHL brought some promising news on the return of international hockey with NHL participants.
NHL Goes International
The NHL has announced today that they are in discussions with the NHLPA to create an international competition in 2025 that would lead to the return of the NHL in the Olympics.
The cycle would start with an international tournament hosted in 2025. Followed by the Olympic Games in 2026. Then every non-Olympic even year after this there would be a World Cup of Hockey that would be hosted.
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly spoke about what the format could look like:
"So if we do a '25 international tournament, we do the '26 Olympics, the '28 World Cup of Hockey, the '30 Olympics, the '32 World Cup of Hockey, and so on," Daly said. "That's the goal."
While this is not set in stone confirmation of an Olympic return it is progress. NHL and hockey fans all over the world are closer to best-on-best competition once again. If this plan is successful fans will have more meaningful international competitions than before the NHL walked away from the Olympics.
