Chicago Blackhawks Organization Makes Their Final Verdict On Changing Their Name
The Chicago Blackhawks have been doing an ongoing review of their name amidst the scrutiny of professional sports franchise naming, and have now made a decision.
Blackhawks to Keep Name Amidst Scrutiny
The Chicago Blackhawks have been scrutinized, among other professional sports teams, for having a potentially derogatory name towards Native Americans. While not as blatantly disrespectful as NFL team names like the former Washington Redskins, the Blackhawks have been doing internal reviews of their name to determine if they need to change it.
However, the organization has determined that they will not be changing their name, as their name is focused on the heritage of a Native American Black Hawk, of the Sac & Fox Nation in Illinois.
"We celebrate Black Hawk's legacy by offering ongoing reverent examples of Native American culture, traditions and contributions, providing a platform for genuine dialogue with local and national Native American groups. As the team's popularity grew over the past decade, so did that platform and our work with these important organizations."
Blackhawks Hope to Stay on the Line of Respect
There is a fine line between respecting Native American heritage through a team name and engaging in disrespectful behaviour. The Blackhawks believe that they will be able to stay on the side of respect by engaging in Native American heritage celebrations and raising awareness.
"We recognize there is a fine line between respect and disrespect, and we commend other teams for their willingness to engage in that conversation," the team said. "Moving forward, we are committed to raising the bar even higher to expand awareness of Black Hawk and the important contributions of all Native American people."
It's clear that the Blackhawks will have to continue to question themselves moving forward to ensure that they don't slip into the side of disrespect, and those internal conversations will continue moving forward.
