During an appearance on the Empty Netters Podcast Jack Eichel was asked about Phil Kessel. Eichel told a story that has already become a Kessel classic.
According to Eichel, Phil Kessel and Jonathan Marchessault were in the locker room horsing around. They were trying to make one another flinch. At one point both players lunged toward each other and collided heads.
This led Kessel to get a goose egg and Marchessault to need stitches. Kessel was upset with Marchessault after the incident.
Both players would go on to play in the game. However, after the game Kessel had the Golden Knights worried that the streak was in danger.
After the game, Kessel was bothered by the pain from the goose egg as well as a groin injury according to Eichel. The team had a 2-hour train ride from Montreal to Ottawa. To remedy his pain Kessel turned to an unlikely source.
Eichel says Kessel drank 4-5 cokes during the two-hour train ride. It ultimately must've worked because Kessel did not miss the next game. Kessel has been a model of consistency in the NHL when it comes to being healthy and available even with his unusual diets and lifestyle.
