Jack Hughes Claps Back at the Haters after Career Year
Not every prospect comes out of the gate a fully developed star. In fact, most players need time to find their legs in the NHL, despite the pressure from fans to perform at a high level right away.
2022-23 was Jack Hughes' fourth season in the NHL since being drafted 1st overall in 2019. He made the most of it in a big way, putting up career numbers in goals (43), assists (56), and points (99). Before this season began, Hughes was taking flak from detractors with many calling him a bust. In an end of year interview today, Hughes let his haters know he heard the criticism.
"I think I...established myself as a really good player in the league. Maybe the goal-scoring a bit, I don't know if anyone expected me to score 40 in my career, let alone three after everyone was calling me the biggest bust ever, you know."
New Jersey obviously saw the potential in Hughes, and let him progress year over year since scoring 7 goals and 14 assists in his rookie season. The patience paid off.
Proving himself in the post season
Hughes had continued success in the playoffs, putting up 6 goals and 11 points in 12 games before the Devils were eliminated. Not that he's found his footing in the NHL, it's a pretty safe bet he will continue to improve.
