When we saw the blockbuster trade happen that brought Jonathan Huberdeau to Calgary, many believed that Huberdeau would just be an asset for the Flames to flip, due to the fact that he only had one season remaining on his contract at a very reasonable cap hit. No one believed he would re-sign long term with the Flames, but to everyones surprise, he signed an 8 year extension.
But before this extension was signed, many believed they were going to bring this french speaking superstar to Montreal, either via a trade or signing the following summer in free agency.
Unfortunately for Habs fans though, he did sign an extension and wont be going to Montreal anytime soon.
He was willing to play for them though, his comments below show that any team that wanted him, he was willing to dedicate himself to them.
"I know a lot of people were saying that: 'Play one year [in Calgary] and then play for Montreal," Huberdeau told the 32 Thoughts podcast.
"As much as love Montreal, I dunno. think it's a tough city for a French- Canadian. Calgary traded for me. If Montreal wanted to trade for me, they would've traded for me. That's how see it. And want to play for a team that wants me. Calgary wanted me, so that's why I wanted to sign a big extension."
It's great to see a player who actually shows commitment and loyalty to a team that shows they are committed to them. Looking at you Gaudreau.
