NHL Forward Ditches His Team Midseason To Play In Europe
One of the last remaining players on a PTO has left the Pittsburgh Penguins in favor of signing a concrete contract with a European team.
Wagner Signs With IK Oskarshamn
When a player signs a PTO with an NHL team, normally they know if they will be getting a contract or not before the season begins. However, in Austin Wagner's case, the Pittsburgh Penguins never released him from his PTO.
This led to Wagner being on his PTO with the Penguins when the season began and reason to believe that he would be eventually signing a contract in Pittsburgh. This was not the case as Wagner signed a contract in the SHL today.
Wagner has spent the majority of his NHL career with the LA Kings, the team that drafted him originally in 2015. Throughout 178 career NHL games, 171 have come with the Kings.
He spent the 2022-23 season with the Hawks and played in 7 total games. He will now focus on impressing with his new SHL and hopefully one day return to the NHL.
