Game 1 of the Stanley cup finals are officially underway between the Colorado Avalanche and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Unfortunately for some players on these teams, no matter who wins, someone won't be allowed to take the cup to their home country.
Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly shared some bad news today that the NHL informed players that the Stanley Cup will not be allowed to be brought to either Russia or Belarus this summer.
When players win the cup, normally each player gets a day with it to themselves. But because of the invasion this year, players from Russia will not be allowed to take it home.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have three key Russian players on their roster, Andrei Vasilevskiy, Nikita Kucherov and Mikhail Sergachev. The Colorado Avalanche have one Valeri Nichushkin. So unfortunately, no matter who wins, someone won't be allowed to take it home.
