Nine minutes into the first per the Devils center received a pass at the blue line, split two Blues defenders through the slot and put a shot on Jordan Binnington, which was saved, but in the process, he was tripped up by a defender's stick, fell to the ice and slid hard into the end boards, right shoulder first.
Hughes would play another shift but would head down the Devils tunnel following.
The 1st overall pick of the 2019 draft, Hughes leads New Jersey with 20 points (5 goals, 15 assists) and was coming off of a two-assist performance in the team's, 5-3, win over Minnesota on Thursday night.
