The Oilers like many teams can not afford to be wasting money. With 8 roster players making more than $5 million, those players make big contributions to the teams success. For most of those players they carry their fair share however there is one Oiler that has not been contributing as well as he should be.
The one Oiler that considered by many fans held the Oilers back last season was goaltender Jack Campbell who has struggled since singing his 5-year $5 million deal with the team.
Oilers reporter Allan Mitchell of The Athletic has said the following about Campbell's status with the team.
There are a few goalies out there the Oilers could trade for. A couple of the names include former Vezina winning goalie Connor Hellebuyck, Vegas' Logan Thompson and Anaheim's John Gibson.
Two of the names on the list are known as superstar goalie and would require the Oilers to give up a lot of assets in order to acquire them.
Someone like Logan Thompson seems like the perfect fit if the Oilers were to move on from Campbell as he looks to only be getting better after his breakout season that saw him go to the NHL All-Star game last season.
However the task of moving Campbell's contract is going to prove difficult if he cannot turn his game around. The Oilers will need consistent goaltending if they are to make a run for the Stanley Cup next season.
