The National Hockey League tends to protect their star players, and rightfully so, the NHL is a business after all and the star players are what brings in the revenue, so if star players are hurt or suspended, it drives down revenue for the league.
Saturday night the Boston Bruins were in Pittsburgh taking on the Penguins in what finished as a 4-3 win for the Bruins.
During the game, there was a goal that the Boston Bruins thought there was some interference on their goaltender Jeremy Swayman, but head coach Jim Montgomery chose not to challenge it due to the 'sid rules'.
If a coach loses a coaches challenge, it turns into a powerplay for the other team, and Montgomery did not want to give Pittsburgh that advantage.
When asked after the game why he chose not to challenge, here was his response:
