Jake Virtanen was basically booted from the NHL after being accused of a sexual assault in 2017. Last month in July, Virtanen took the stand to plead his case, which he pleaded not guilty, stating that everything that happened between him and the 17 year-old female were of consent.
The trial lasted a week in which the jury found Virtanen not guilty, and following this ruling, it looks like Virtanen is making his way back to the NHL.
In his year of exile, Virtanen played in the KHL, scoring 9 goals and 16 points in 36 games.
Virtanen is a former 6th overall pick to the Vancouver Canucks back in 2014, and while he has not developed into the player they really hoped he would be, Virtanen still has a lot to offer a team in a bottom 6 role. His 6'1 227lb frame can provide some depth scoring and some bruising on the other team.
Lucky for him too, it sounds like he is joining a team that is in dire need of just that.
According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, Jake Virtanen will be joining the Edmonton Oilers.
