It was a shocking hour for the hockey world when the Calgary Flames decided to make some splashes. First it was announced that they were signing Stanley Cup winning Nazem Kadri to a 7 year deal with an AAV of $7,000,000.
Then shortly after it was announced that they were trading Sean Monahan to the Montreal Canadiens to free up cap space:
It wasn't originally announced what was going back to the Flames in return for Monahan, but NHL Insider Nick Alberta announced:
Sounds like a 1st rounder going to MTL in deal.
Monahan had a poor season last year after suffering an injury, but if the Montreal Canadiens can get him back to his 25+ goal form, they will have completely ran away with this trade.
It is a good move for Montreal regardless as it helps with the rebuild, and if Monahan comes back to form, they can easily retain salary and flip him for additional assets.
