With his contract situation many wonder if his days in Toronto are numbered. Now two teams have been linked with the Swedish superstar.
According to a rumor provided by Eklund of Hockey Buzz the New York Islanders and Minnesota Wild are both potentially interested in the star winger.
Both teams are looking to continue competing with their current group. William Nylander would provide an instant boost to either team and their chances of winning.
With these two destinations in mind a couple of mock trades have been drawn up that could make sense for all sides.
First up will be the tease that could land Nylander in Minnesota.
With this trade the Wild get their man and for a reasonable price too. The Leafs get significantly younger.
Marco Rossi is a former first round pick with lots of potential that has dealt with health issues. Calen Addison is a former second round pick that carved out a solid role on the Wild last season and could fit right into the Leafs lineup. Then of course the second round pick in 2024 allows the Leafs to rebuild their prospect pool while contending still.
Now we move on to the trade with the New York Islanders:
In this trade the Islanders get their star to pair along with Mathew Barzal. The Leafs get a young winger in Oliver Wahlstrom who will develop while being on a cheaper contract. They fill out their bottom six with JG Pageau who can play both center and wing. Then finally they get a 2024 First Round pick which again can help build their prospect pool.
Of the two trades the deal with the Islanders is likely more enticing to the Leafs. They would get more players to help them contend now while still getting a future asset in the 2024 first rounder.
It will be interesting to see if there is anything to the rumors between these two teams going forward.
