To say the Edmonton Oilers have been disappointing to start the year would be an understatement. After being projected as a Stanley Cup favorite all offseason, they have folded over in the first 11 games of the year notching two wins and nine losses, eight of which came in regulation.
A large reason behind their struggles is their goaltending. They have allowed three or more goals in all but two of their games this season and have allowed four or more goals in 8 games.
As a result of this, the Oilers decided to waive $5 million goaltender Jack Campbell with the hopes of clearing up some cap space and having Campbell bounce back after an AHL stint.
With Campbell heading to the AHL, the Oilers are now looking for an upgrade and are eyeing 2019 Stanley Cup champion Jordan Binnington.
A recent report from Reid Wilkins has revealed that the Oilers are showing interest in Binnginton.
Binnington is known as one of the most streaky goaltenders in the NHL. When he is on his game he is a Vezina caliber goaltender but when rattled he becomes one of the worst goalies in the game.
Last season he struggled posting an .894 SV% and a 3.31 GAA which had fans worried about if he was past his prime. However, his start to this year has been strong posting a .919 SV% and a 2.58 GAA showing that he still has the capacity to be an elite goaltender.
We will now wait and see if the Oilers work out a deal with Binnington or if they let him go as St. Louis' price would be too high.
