It hasn't been an easy year for Russian NHL players and draft eligible prospects. The threat of persecution and travel restrictions have made it hard for Russian players to live their lives. With many NHL teams reportedly already showing concern over drafting Russian prospects, Vladimir Putin might have just made things worse.

Players Forced to Stay in Russia

Flyers goalie prospect Ivan Fedotov found his name in the news last year after it was revealed that he was sent to work for the Russian military, and wouldn't be allowed to make the switch to North America. We now know that Fedotov will be allowed to leave the military, but it doesn't appear like his club will be letting go of him any time soon.

Flyers insider Russ Cohen dropped a major bombshell regarding the goaltender recently:

Getting word that CSKA GM said he expects Ivan Fedotov back from the army to play for his team for the rest of his career. - Russ Cohen

If already drafted prospects like Fedotov aren't allowed out of the country, why would the Russian government allow their prized possession, Matvei Michkov, out of the nation. Michkov is eligible for the 2023 draft, and although he is one of the most talented players in the draft, will likely fall due to his current situation in Russia.

The youngster already has a contract in place in Russia for three more years, but there's concern that the KHL and Putin (who loves hockey) could make him the richest player in KHL history in order to keep him in Russia.
