Toronto Maple Leafs Star Accused Of Disrespecting Fallen Soldiers
North American sports are characterized in part by the tradition of playing the national anthems before the game begins. Last night this lead to a miniature controversy as William Nylander was seen giggling during an unusual arrangement of the Star Spangled Banner being played on an electric guitar.
Nylander Criticized For Behavior During National Anthem
The Leafs superstar could be seen smiling and giggling as a guitar player gave the crowd a highly unusual version of the American national anthem played with lots of variations to the standard tune.
William Nylander laughing at the shredding of the US national anthem is EVERYTHING
Nylander was not alone as many fans seemed to share a similar opinion about this particular rendition of the national anthem.
However, not everyone saw the fun in the moment. One X account seemed to be particularly upset by his reaction to the national anthem as they accused him of disrespecting American armed service members.
Fans in the replies seemed to be split on whether or not this clip was meant to be satire.
Not sure what's funnier. These guys joking about Nylander, or the folks in the comments that think this is serious?
To be fair, it seems that this is intended to be satire as they go on a long discussion about how American teams won't want to sign him because of this. Obviously that is not true and it would be a ridiculous thing for an NHL general manager to consider. Still though, some believe that this segment was meant to be taken seriously.
