Edmonton Oilers could pursue Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones according to new report

The Edmonton Oilers could be looking to make a major upgrade early on in the NHL season by adding defenseman Seth Jones according to a new report.

The Edmonton Oilers had a frustrating offseason in 2024. Of course, they began the offseason after a heartbreaking 2024 Stanley Cup Finals loss. Then just weeks into free agency the Oilers lost two of their youngest stars Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway after they signed offer sheets with the St. Louis Blues.

Since then the Oilers have made a couple of upgrades. However, they have failed to replace the potential star power that a player like Philip Broberg could've provided. This has led to a new report connecting the Edmonton Oilers to a blockbuster trade that would land them a highly touted defenseman.

Stan Bowman and the Edmonton Oilers have been looking for a second defenseman to take the offensive pressure off of Evan Bouchard. While Evan Bouchard is a fantastic defenseman having a second offensive powerhouse on defense would help lessen the drop-off when Evan Bouchard needs a break.

As a result, a new report has connected the Oilers to a trade that would land them Seth Jones from the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Chicago Blackhawks are still a young team that is hoping to make a playoff push. Even if they were to make their way back into the playoffs this season they likely wouldn't be a serious contender. With this in mind they might be willing to part with Seth Jones.

In his best seasons, Seth Jones is a 50-plus point defenseman who is solid defensively. His floor is a 30-40-point defenseman who can play in all situations. This is exactly the type and level of defenseman that has been missing in Edmonton recently.

If the Blackhawks were willing to part with Seth Jones then Stan Bowman the Edmonton Oilers would be foolish not to give negotiations a chance. With the season on the horizon this move could be one to look at closer to the trade deadline. If the Blackhawks struggle out of the game trade rumors around Seth Jones should increase significantly.
