The National Hockey League will be getting some competition as a new league was just announced. Major League Hockey will be bringing professional, 3 on 3 action to North America later this year.

Steve Dangle from SDPN was the first to report the news, doing so in video format. The news comes out of the blue as there had not been any indications of a competitor for the NHL emerging any time soon. Additionally, it is a bit odd that the news is being broken by SDPN, and not a major network.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS! 🚨

A NEW pro hockey league is coming to North America! 3-on-3 Major League Hockey arrives THIS FALL!

@Steve_Dangle has the details! ⬇️

In the announcement video, Dangle released all the details that we know about the new league so far. The inaugural season will be this year, teams will be allowed three players each with pro experience, there will be a 30 million dollar salary cap, 14 man rosters, and 16 teams.

Fan response was largely positive, but many expressed doubts about the league's ability to find success. There are certainly a lot of logistics to figure out, and Hockey isn't exactly a household sport in the U.S.

The financials of this don't make sense. Sounds like a fairytale idea that will go down in flames.

Nevertheless, it will certainly be exciting to watch this league unfold, presumably around the same time the 2024-25 NHL season starts.
