NHL insider reveals shocking information about the salary cap heading into 2025-26 season
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed today that some teams around the league are not excited about the salary cap going up.
The NHL's salary cap has been relatively stagnant for the past several seasons, only going up significantly this past summer.
It appears as though that may be changing though as reports have emerged indicating that the salary cap could take a big leap this offseason.
Apparently, not every team around the NHL is excited about this possibility though.
Elliotte Friedman noted in his latest episode of 32 Thoughts that not every team plans on spending to the cap if it does approach 100 million dollars.
"I think this is going to be one of the more interesting fundamental conversations around the league in the next little while. In two years, the cap is probably going to be over $100 million and there are teams that are not comfortable with that.
And I think what we saw today was a message from Colorado that there are going to be some teams, as this cap rises to the 100 million or more range, they're not going to be comfortable with going there."
Of course, Friedman is referring to the fact that the Avalanche traded Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes yesterday.
Rantanen reportedly is looking for a huge contract this summer, potentially in the range of 14 million dollars a season.
The Avalanche supposedly had an internal cap on him at 12.5 million, matching Nathan MacKinnon's current deal, which is the impasse that apparently led to the trade.
Friedman seems to believe that this is indicative of the way the Avs will be handling the cap going forward.
This could mean that teams like Colorado will be at a disadvantage if they are not willing to spend to the cap, especially if it goes up as quickly as some are expecting.
Friedman went on to say that the salary cap could well surpass 100 million two years from now.
"Everyone's assuming in the next CBA we're going back to 50-50.podcast in November last year. If that's the case, and again it depends on who you talk to, there are some estimates ... that think in two years, a 50-50 cap will be close to $110 million."
With this in mind, the landscape of the NHL could be set to change in a big way over the next few years.
Regardless of how things play out, it will certainly be an exciting era in the league's history.
