Shane Wright and Juraj Slafkovsky will forever be linked through the 2022 NHL Draft. Wright the expected number one overall pick that year was passed over by Slafkovsky and a pair of other players before being selected 4th overall by the Seattle Kraken. Now over a year later, Wright spoke about Slafkovsky and the situation.
Wright Makes His Disappointment Toward Montreal Known
Shane Wright leading up to the 2022 NHL Draft felt he was the best player in the draft and deserved to go first overall. After that not being the case he was disappointed as anyone would be.
"His reaction in the stands of the Bell Centre, upset and eagerly waiting to be drafted, gave him a certain reputation as a spoiled child. His glance towards the Canadiens' table was not well received either. Wright, a competitor, had expressed before the draft that he wanted to be the first player selected and that he felt he deserved it." - Nicolas Cloutier
This reputation has followed Shane Wright since draft night into his now professional career. Wright finds himself still working towards a full time NHL role. In a new interview Wright spoke about the events of the draft and his thoughts on Juraj Slafkovsky.
Wright Makes A Shocking Statement Regarding Slafkovsky
Despite being disappointed with Montreal's choice Wright has never seemed to have personal beef with Juraj Slafkovsky himself. While Wright believes he is the better player it was always the Canadiens organization that Wright was upset with. This was confirmed in Shane Wright's recently surprising comments about Slafkovsky.
"Slafkovsky is playing very well right now," Wright conceded during a videoconference interview with TVA Sports. "In the last month, he has played some very good hockey in Montreal. Obviously, he is where I want to be. I want to perform in the NHL. My time will come, I hope. I have to believe in the plan." - Wright
Wright is playing in the AHL still at this point and having a good bit of success. With the Kraken full of veterans it has always been difficult for him to crack the lineup but Wright still holds a ton of potential. As both of these prospects hit their stride into their prime it will be fun to see the comparisons continue.
