The Minnesota Wild have acquired Gustav Nyquist in a trade from the Nashville Predators today.

The sell off has officially begun for Barry Trotz and the Nashville Predators.

After a very busy offseason that saw major acquisitions in the form of Jonathan Marchessault and Steven Stamkos, most NHL fans were expecting the Predators to at least be a playoff contender if not a contender for the Stanley Cup.

However, things have gone horribly wrong and the team currently is in 7th place in the Central Division, ahead of only the Chicago Blackhawks, who have been one of the worst teams in the league for three years running.

In case it wasn't already obvious that the Predators would be sellers at this Friday's deadline, they confirmed their position today by making their first big move.

Veteran winger Gustav Nyquist was sent to the Minnesota Wild.

Notably, the team is retaining 50% of his contract, which expires at the end of the season. As such, his cap hit with the team is just 1.59 million dollars.

In exchange for the 35-year-old, the Predators received a 2nd round pick in the 2026 NHL draft.

"Nashville Predators General Manager Barry Trotz announced today that the team has acquired Minnesota's own second-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft from the Wild in exchange for forward Gustav Nyquist. In connection with this trade, Nashville has agreed to retain 50 percent of Nyquist's salary."

Nyquist has 841 games of NHL experience, racking up 207 career goals and 524 points so far.

He has previous experience with Bill Guerin and the Wild as he got into three games with the club during the 2022-23 season, where he recorded a goal and five points.

This will almost certainly not be the last move either team makes this week, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more trades in the coming week.
