There are few things in hockey that will put a smile on your face more than when a goalie scores. It's always a special moment made even better when you see the goalie's teammates celebrating with him. Last night we were treated to the rare feat as Owen Sound attack netminder Carter George secured the empty netter.
George did it with style too, shooting the puck from the butterfly position, not even getting up to his feet to make the attempt. This resulted in quite the celebration as he tackled one of his teammates who had fallen to the ice. Then he got to do what all goalies dream about, skating past the bench to fist-bump all the guys.
George joins Minnesota Wild netminder Filip Gustavsson as goalies with goals this season. The Swedish netminder scored in a very similar fashion to George, shooting the puck immediately after making a save. However, he made the save standing up and was able to drop the puck to himself easily. Regardless, scoring as a goalie is impressive regardless of what level you are playing at.
George was not the only goalie to get on the scoresheet last night either. New York Islanders netminder Semyon Varlamov got a secondary assist on an Anders Lee goal to give the team a four-one lead over Vancouver.
George, 18, was drafted 52nd overall by Los Angeles in the 2024 draft. In 15 games this season, he has a 4-7-4 record but does have a very respectable .908 save percentage. Last season he had a .907 save percentage across 56 games and had a 23-21-6 record. He did make four starts in the playoffs as well, but Owen Sound was swept in the first round. Many believe he has real NHL upside so he is certainly one of the top young Canadian goalies to keep track of.
