The Detroit Red Wings are having a solid season this year. However, one of their prospects appears to be trending in the wrong direction following today's move.

Red Wings Transfer Defenseman Prospect To Switzerland

The Grand Rapid Griffins of the AHL announced today that defenseman Jared McIsaac has been reassigned to HC Ambri-Piotta of the top Swiss pro league. The 23-year-old has missed significant time this season as he's delt with ongoing injury problems.

Transaction Alert 📰

The Detroit Red Wings have assigned Jared McIsaac to HC Ambri-Piotta of the Swiss National League.

The Truro, NS product has played 15 games with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins this season, recording 4 points (1G,3A).

McIsaac was drafted in the 2nd round, 36th overall by the Red Wings in 2018. Since then he's played in 156 games at the AHL level, recording 9 goals and 52 points. When he was originally drafted, he was expected to become a regular NHL player but at this point, that seems to be quite unlikely as the Red Wings are very deep on defense and he has not developed as expected. This could be why the team is loaning him to the Swiss club.

Red Wings Planning Major Move At Trade Deadline?

That being said, this move could signal something else. The Red Wings have quietly been making minor moves lately as the team recently released Nolan Stevens from his contract as well. Theoretically, the team could be opening up roster spots for a major deal as they look poised to be buyers at the trade deadline.

I wonder what the Red Wings are up to. They unconditionally released Nolan Stevens. Now they've assigned Jared McIsaac to Switzerland. The Griffins are in 2nd-place in the Central, though they are 9th in the AHL's Western Conference. A shake-up or planning in advance? #LGRW

At this point, we will just have to wait and see what Steve Yzerman has planned. The general manager has been known to come up with sneaky plans in the past so whatever comes next for Detroit could be quite interesting.
