The Minnesota Wild and Edmonton Oilers played a hard-hitting, tight contest on Wednesday night, and coming out of the game, there's been controversy surrounding a hit from Oilers captain Connor McDavid.
Despite a clear elbow to the head of Wild veteran Marcus Johansson, McDavid escaped any suspension or fine from the NHL, much to the dismay of fans, as they believe this is yet another example of preferential treatment from the league towards No. 97.
Unsurprisingly, Johansson's teammates weren't too happy about the hit either, as defenseman Jake Middleton has now reacted to the league deciding to not hand down any discipline to McDavid.
It's unclear if Middleton's anger is more directed towards McDavid for the play or the NHL for not handing out a penalty or a fine/suspension after the fact, but either way, it's very easy to see why there is frustration in Minnesota.
As a result of the play, the Wild announced that Johansson had suffered an upper-body injury, with McDavid clearly taking a cheap shot directly at his head, but somehow, the NHL decided that this play was completely okay.
If it happened the other way however, things would no doubt be different, with Middleton eluding to the fact that McDavid gets away with this due to being the best player in the NHL.
Ultimately though, there's nothing that Middleton or the Wild can do about it right now, but when the two teams meet again this season, expect plenty of fireworks, and don't be surprised to see a player take a shot at No. 97 as a result of this situation.
