On a podcast, two hockey analysts went head-to-head, discussing whether Logan Mailloux could become a valuable trade chip for the Montreal Canadiens under GM Kent Hughes. The guys compare that situation to Alexander Romanov, a young defenseman the Canadiens moved despite his upside.
They went on to discuss the incredible market value of Mailloux. Then journalist Simon Boisvert, an expert in the field, shared his knowledge of the fact that Mailloux is going to play for Montreal for a very long time. The same as Romanov did, he may still move, however. As per Boisvert, though Mailloux is a promising player, maybe he will go on to become more valued as a trade chip.
Mathias Brunet completed the thought by saying that a number of indications had shown Romanov would leave well before the actual trade, and the same can occur in Mailloux's situation once a suitable deal comes up. He thus repeated that the Canadiens might actually deal him in a trade for other assets, and the Calgary Flames appeared as the front-runners, as they have quite a loaded prospect pool.
Of course, the idea of trading off Mailloux is only a rumor at this point, but definitely one to keep an eye on. The value of that trade could be fairly high, arguably higher than the potential value of Justin Barron, yet another young right-handed defenseman. However, there are those who believe the Canadiens should show patience and give Mailloux an opportunity to develop first.
