NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reveals the Canadiens are closing in on a trade for two players

GM of the Canadiens, Kent Hughes, appears to be all-in to make the playoffs this season as he is close to making a trade for two players, according to Elliotte Friedman.

The Montreal Canadiens are in the news often, with many reports on potential player movements. A very credible voice in Elliotte Friedman does lend some merit to those speculations as he has pointed out that indeed, the team is working toward the betterment of their roster.

GM Kent Hughes is said to be working on two major additions to the Canadiens' roster, a top-four right-shot defenseman and a gritty hard-nosed forward. In that, he aims to make them more competitive without giving away prospects and long-term goals. That seems to indicate Hughes is looking for players who are making an immediate difference to be able to have sustainability with the franchise.

With so many valued sources in alignment, for sure these trade talks aren't mere speculation but based on reality. That fact Hughes has adopted such a hands-on approach to re-shaping this roster is encouraging. Word is he's juggling several negotiations and putting in substantial time working the phones. His proactive nature, along with a solid track record of making smart trades, certainly gives fans plenty of reason to be optimistic about the team's direction.
