The New York Rangers have been looking to move on from Jacob Trouba since the summer, and while there were reports that he would use his no-trade clause to block a deal, it became clear on Friday that a deal was happening.
The story moved along quickly when Pierre LeBrun revealed that a deal with the Anaheim Ducks was all but done, with Larry Brooks of the New York Post then quickly confirming a deal has been finalized between the two teams.
With an $8 million cap hit for this season and next, a deal was always going to be hard to come by, but given that the Ducks have plenty of cap space as a rebuilding team, a deal with them made plenty of sense for the Rangers.
We are still yet to see the finalized details of the trade, but for now, Trouba has played his final game as a New York Ranger, and the once promising captain will now head West to join the Anaheim Ducks.
EDITOR UPDATE:
The Rangers will be receiving former first-round pick Urho Vaakanainen and a fourth-round pick in return for Trouba.
Perhaps the most important part of the deal for New York was that they are not retaining any salary, with the Ducks set to take on the full contract of Trouba which runs out at the end of the 2025/26 campaign.
Now that Trouba is gone, speculation continues in New York about the future of Chris Kreider and whether the team will name a new captain, but for now they have much more salary cap to work with as they look to put a Stanley Cup contender on the ice.
