New York Rangers general manager Chris Drury seemingly has something big in the works, as reports suggest he's set to make a big splash once Jacob Trouba's exit is officially completed, possibly as early as today.
According to Larry Brooks of 'The New York Post', the Rangers have had trade discussions with several clubs, and have zeroed in on Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk.
The 25-year-old power forward would certainly add some energy and a type of grit that this lineup has been lacking at times when looking stale.
Brady Tkachuk has developed into a well-rounded threat, the son of former NHL star Keith Tkachuk and brother to Panthers standout Matthew.
Through 25 games this season, he has scored 13 goals and 29 points while accumulating 50 penalty minutes, proving he can produce offensively while still sporting his trademark physical edge.
That projects through his NHL career, 31 goals and 67 points per 82 games played, with some feisty 119 penalty minutes annually, all played for the Senators.
Landing Tkachuk would be no small feat. Picked fourth overall in the 2018 draft, he's in the third year of an eight-year deal with a cap hit of $8.205 million through the 2027-28 campaign.
The cost to acquire him would likely be quite high, probably involving roster players. Brooks speculates that Alexis Lafreniere, the former first-overall pick, might be part of the trade package needed to bring Tkachuk to New York.
If the Rangers can make this move work, it could prove to be a transformative acquisition for a team hungry to return to Stanley Cup contention.
