Over the past 18 months, no one has come under more scrutiny from the NHL's Department of Player Safety than New York's Matt Rempe, and in his return game on Monday, he is once again in hot water.
During a matchup with the St. Louis Blues, Rempe charged Jake Neighbours, and unsurprisingly, the unnecessary play on the ice was called for roughing and a two-minute minor on the ice.
Despite just being a minor on the ice, many were calling for a suspension for Rempe, especially given how he keeps making dumb, unnecessary plays like this, despite the team obviously trying to move him away from this type of a play.
Now, it has been confirmed that there will be no more punishment for Rempe on this play, with Blues writer Matthew DeFranks confirming that it simply wasn't forceful enough for the league to warrant a potential suspension.
Ultimately, if a suspension did become a possibility on this play, it should be chalked up to a reputation play, because while it was an idiotic move from Rempe, it certainly wasn't bad enough to be a suspension or even a fine.
However, this does leave many questions for the Rangers as to whether or not Rempe can be used at the NHL level consistently, and while he can fight, there's more to the game than that, with Rempe struggling to show he can play without that.
For now, though, he avoids a suspension for an unnecessary play on the ice, but with the Rangers looking to shake up their team, one has to wonder if Rempe has a future with the Rangers or in the NHL at all.
