The Toronto Maple Leafs started the new NHL season well, but have now dropped their third straight game, taking their record to 4-4-1 with plenty of questions being asked about their roster. While their previous two losses came by four goals each, it was Saturday night's OT loss to the Boston Bruins that may have hurt the most, as the team fell to a fierce division rival in a game that they needed to win.
There were many factors that played into the loss, it was Auston Matthews' turnover in overtime that led directly to a Brad Marchand game-winner that has no doubt been the talk of social media on Sunday.
While it was the late-game heroics of No. 34 that took this game into overtime, the turnover was an ugly one, and on Sunday, the captain addressed what happened on that play:
On the surface, it may look like it's all on Matthews' shoulders, but the play of his teammates wasn't ideal in that situation, with Head Coach Craig Berube taking all the blame off his captain with his comments.
At this point, it simply looks like the Maple Leafs aren't on the same page, and given the puck is in your own end in a crucial OT situation, there needs to be better awareness for the entire team. However, there's still plenty of time left in the season for the Maple Leafs to turn things around, and with such a talented group, don't expect them to be down for too long.
