Wrapped into the success of their elite "Core Four" players, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares, and William Nylander, the Toronto Maple Leafs have found their identity in their superstars, while the franchise is already focused on how to secure its future with burgeoning talents.
According to a report, one of the more promising prospects that the Maple Leafs have is reportedly close to signing a long-term contract extension. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently said the Leafs have engaged in some serious negotiations with Matthew Knies, which may signal a deal can be completed any day now.
Knies is a 21-year-old forward in the final season of his entry-level contract, which carries a cap hit of $925,000. In July 2025, he will become a restricted free agent if no agreement has been made. With some considerable speed, Knies has become one of the main contributors, playing on the Leafs' first line with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner while finishing with 15 goals and 35 points this past season.
Friedman reinforced the bearing of the fact that Knies was named assistant captain against the Montreal Canadiens in a preseason game. It is indicative, Friedman said, to show the long-term commitment by the Maple Leafs to Knies and their belief in his potential to become one of their future leaders.
With Matthew Knies now gearing up for the forthcoming season, a telling one for his career path, his aim is set on performing at a high level this season, whether he signs a contract extension or not before the end of the season.
