Despite the Toronto Maple Leafs hot start, GM Brad Treliving is focused on the Leafs potential playoff push and has made it clear he is looking to add.
Of Treliving's wants, forwards who can check and defend rank at the top of his wishlist. The perfect candidate who does both of these has emerged from the New York Rangers, Vincent Trocheck.
The Maple Leafs are already going to be faced with a difficult question on what to do with Mitch Marner and William Nylander when Auston Matthews returns but the addition of Trocheck could make that decision easier to make.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has confirmed a lot of news regarding the Maple Leafs recently but his latest report about the New York Rangers has turned many heads.
Friedman reporting that core pieces like Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreisler being available for trade means that the Rangers are essentially open for sale.
Trocheck would be the perfect piece for the Leafs to add as he is on a relatively cheap contract, with an AAV of only $5.625 million for the next four years, and provides much more outside his offense.
Trocheck can effectively kill penalties, win faceoffs, lay hits, and block shots: all things that Treliving would love to add.
The package it would take to acquire a player like Trocheck is currently unknown but the Leafs would certainly need to part with some top young prospects, picks, and maybe even current roster players.
However, this may not be the hardest part of the Leafs' effort to acquire Trocheck. The Pittsburgh native loves playing for New York and has a full no-movement clause.
Essentially, if the Leafs and Rangers agree on a deal, Trocheck could veto the trade keeping him in the Big Apple. However, if he likes his chances of winning the elusive Stanley Cup in Toronto more than his chances of winning in New York, he could green-light the trade.
Only time will tell what happens with the Leafs as the season progresses but Trocheck would certainly be the perfect center man for them to add.
