The Vancouver Canucks went up against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 4-3 overtime loss. After the game many of the questions were not about the game but instead about Elias Pettersson's lack of contract talks with the Canucks.
Canucks Teammates Comment On Pettersson's Lack Of Contract Talks
It has been well-reported that the Vancouver Canucks and Elias Pettersson are not all that close to a contract extension. Last night things became a distraction for the Canucks as several members of the team were asked about the situation.
First up was Norris Trophy candidate Quinn Hughes who complimented Pettersson and says the team is not concerned about the negotiations.
Me and Petey are pretty close, started Hughes. He has been a superstar here since he came in the league and he knows how to deal with things. Nobody even looks at any of that stuff (speculation) and nobody even cares.
Following up Hughes was star forward Brock Boeser who addressed this question as well. Boeser echoed Hughes sentiments about Pettersson's professionalism.
There's obviously a lot (of speculation) and Petey has kind of gone through this before. He just has to focus on his game and continue to work hard. He's a pro. He knows how he's playing or if he needs to play better, or whatever it is.
At the end of the day Pettersson's teammates can say all they would like about the situation but Pettersson will have to make a decision. Pettersson also spoke to the media and gave an update on where he is at.
Pettersson Gives An Update On His Mindset During Contract Negotiations
Elias Pettersson is a relatively quiet person so when he speaks about his contract it becomes noteworthy no matter what he says. This time Pettersson decided to discuss his mindset and how he is handling the stress and attention from these negotiations.
I'm happy. It's a great city to play in, he said. Obviously, there have been some down years, but I want to finish the season well and I'll deal with what's ahead.
I don't like to focus too much on what's ahead. I like to live in the moment.
It sounds as though Pettersson is committed to bringing the best on-ice product he can during his time in Vancouver. What happens in the seasons to come does not seem to worry Pettersson until he reaches a decision point.
