Jack Eichel laid a brutal hit on Edmonton's Mattias Ekholm on Saturday, but after calls from fans on social media for a suspension on the highly dangerous play, he has officially escaped further punishment for the play.

The Vegas Golden Knights and Edmonton Oilers rivalry continues to heat up, and on Saturday night it got even hotter when Jack Eichel seemingly boarded Mattias Ekholm, leaving him on the ice for several moments.

What looked to be a straightforward boarding call was shockingly ignored by the official right next to the play, but on social media almost immediately, fans were calling for Eichel to be suspended.

The play was as clear as day, with an official right next to the play, and given that the league is aiming to protect their players, this one seemed to be a no-brainer.

The inconsistency in NHL officiating has been a major problem as of late, and this is yet another example of it, as Eichel wasn't even given a minor penalty, whereas other players have received five-minute majors and game misconducts for similar plays.

After the play was ignored on the ice, many hoped that the NHL's Department of Player Safety would step in on Sunday and hand down punishment for the Golden Knights star, but unfortunately, the 5 PM deadline has come and gone with no announcement from the league.

On the surface, this would be completely okay from the league if other players weren't receiving penalties and fines for their actions, with fans and players simply wanting them to be consistent.

Unfortunately, not only was this play a perfect example of their inconsistency, but it may also lead more and more fans to believe that the Golden Knights receive preferential treatment from the NHL, but for now, all we know is that Eichel has escaped any type of punishment from the league.
