In mid-November, Alex Ovechkin was on the pace for a 68-goal season when he was injured in a game against the Utah Hockey Club.
He entered into a collision with Jack McBain, resulting in a fracture to his left fibula:
On November 21st, the Caps announced that the captain would miss four to six weeks due to that injury:
Today, 17 days after he broke his leg, his organization shared a surprising update.
On X, they posted pictures and videos of Ovechkin on the ice.
Check it out:
This marks a major step in his recovery. From now on, he should make further tests to see how his leg feels on the ice, and could soon join his teammates for practice if he doesn't face any setbacks.
At 39 years old, he's defying prognostics. Usually, players in that age range need more time to recover from injuries, but Ovi seems on his way to being back much sooner than anticipated.
Hopefully, he'll return to the lineup soon and will find the same rhythm he had earlier this season.
In only 18 games this year, he scored 25 points, including 15 goals.
Ovi only needs 27 more goals to beat Wayne Gretzky's record, and he likely won't stop working hard until he gets there.
If he finds that rhythm, he should reach his goal sooner than later. He and his whole team appear to be on a mission to get it done.
The Caps are currently leading the Metropolitan Division with a 17-6-2 record. Their next game is set to go down tomorrow, as they travel to Toronto to face the Maple Leafs, who are also at the top of their division, boasting a 16-7-2 record.
