The greatest goal scorer potential of all time is currently struggling to find the back of the net.
Ovechkin Breaks the Silence Amidst Goal Scoring Drought
For the past numerous year the number 8 on Washington was feared by goalies as Ovechkin was a deadly goal scorer to play against.
However after not being able to put the puck in the net for the last 13 games many fans have begun to think the "Great 8" may be running out of goals.
Ovechkin has brought up the drought in a recent interview, saying he is not worried about the scoring.
«The most important thing is we collect the points, and we win the games,» he said. «I'd rather be in a playoff spot than score 20 goals and you're out of contention.»
When asked how the drought started Ovi said this:
«I don't know,» Ovechkin told NHL.com on Wednesday. «Some luck. I have chances, I have pretty good chances, but sometimes it's just a period of maybe you hold the stick too tight because you didn't score or something. But I think overall, sooner or later it's going to happen, and everything is going to go in.»
«I think it's frustration for me, I think frustration for everybody,» he said. «You can see we don't score as many goals as we used to score, and I don't know if you're going to blame the system or whatever. We play hockey. We have to create chances. We have to create opportunities for yourself and for your teammates to set it up and have a good chance.»
Ovi also knows his role on this Capitals team is to score goals and that is the main source of goals on the Capitals offence.
Ovi's Quest For NHL History May Fall Just Short
Many people thought at the end of last season that there was no doubt that Ovi would beat Wayne Gretzky's goal scoring record (894) however after a terribly slow start to the season Ovi may be showing signs of age.
The 38-year-old forward has just five goals this season, putting his career total at 827. Falling 67 goals short of tying the record.
If Ovi Struggles to find his scoring touch this season and next, the Russian sniper may fall short of breaking a long lasting NHL record.
